To continue the levels of consciousness theme, the next level we need to talk about is Apathy.
We all have times of apathy in our lives, when it doesn’t seem worth it, when our warm bed seems more appealing than whatever it is that we need to do.
But if we allow ourselves to sink into apathy long-term, it can have disastrous effects on our lives. Maybe not in an active way, but certainly in the form of missed opportunities and regrets.
People rarely end up regretting the things they did, and are much more likely, on their death bed, to regret the things they didn’t do.
Luckily, apathy is quite easy to break. We can get out of it with any of the higher consciences… perhaps we need to grieve for the loss of something… maybe a person, maybe something physical, or maybe something more emotional like the loss of our youth or vitality.
We can rise to fear. Or desire.
It seems odd that ‘fear’ would be a raising of consciousness, but if you think about the person who can’t be bothered in their job, the fear of getting fired may be just what they need to snap out of it.
The other thing we can do is to achieve. Achieve anything.
Many years ago I was signed off for three months with chronic stress. I had a mantra at that time:
“You only have to achieve one thing per day, and that one thing can be as little as getting enough sleep, enjoying a cup of tea, or leaving the house if only for a few minutes”
You see apathy comes about when we lose hope. It’s often combined with shame and guilt, but even if not, we just can’t bring ourselves to achieve anything. Maybe we don’t believe we have the power to make a difference.
And so it’s the small simple achievements that help. We make a tiny difference in our own lives, or the lives of those around us. And we slowly notice that the difference is helpful.
The question, really, is what are you apathetic about? Where have you lost hope? In what ways do you feel powerless?
Answering these questions (or even just deeply feeling the question without needing an answer) can begin the healing process.
And you will begin to realise that you are more powerful than you ever imagined.
